Top 3 Ways to Get Captains to Notice You

When you're looking for a yacht job, you want the captain to notice you…as long as it's for the good things! As you're accumulating experience and references, you want to be making a good impression. Here are the top 3 ways to get captains to notice you:

1. Looking the Part

Appearances matter and you must be clean cut, neat, and professional. If you feel like you're a part of the team, you'll become a part of the team. A bad appearance is a poor reflection of the crew and the yacht as a whole. Here are a few things that you should be doing to present yourself well when meeting a captain:

  • Ladies: hair tied back, natural makeup, smile, pressed shirt and skort/shorts

  • Gentlemen: haircut, clean shaven, ironed and tucked shirt, don't look scruffy

2. Professional CV

Your CV is the first impression the captain will have of you - even before they meet you! If you're making certain mistakes, you will greatly decrease your chances of getting the job you want or even a job at all. Read our CV guide and download our free templates if you don't know where to start. Make sure that it is clearly laid out and that there are no spelling or grammar errors.

3. Follow-up

Following up with captains is not only good manners, it makes you look proactive, professional and on top of it. Captains can get busy, so following up politely (without demanding or bombarding) will get you noticed. DON'T send multiple texts hounding them for an answer. DO send a professional email or text after your interview, thanking them for their time and consideration. If you've dayworked for them, be sure to thank them for the opportunity and to keep you in mind if they need help again.
